Abstract

In Germany a missio canonica is required by teachers of religious education. To this end, the German Bishops' Conference created a new template order in 2023, however it was differently implemented by the dioceses. This article reflects upon several canonical aspects of the differing mission orders, in particular the granting and withdrawal of the missio canonica for schoolteachers with regard to the criteria of doctrinal orthodoxy and to being a witness of Christian life. In doing so, the differences between universal canon law and the template order as well as between the variant versions of the missio orders in the German dioceses are discussed.
