Abstract

This article explores the contribution of Pope Francis's Apostolic Constitution “Episcopalis Communio” to the “conversion of the papacy”. The author posits that this “conversion” is inextricably linked to the “reform of the Church in her missionary outreach”, as outlined by Pope Francis in his first post-synodal apostolic exhortation, “Evangelii Gaudium”. To advance this conversion in an institutional sense, Pope Francis draws on canon law. In conclusion, the author identifies a four-fold contribution of the Apostolic Constitution “Episcopalis Communio” to the conversion of the papacy. It is more synodal and more clearly oriented towards the People of God. Additionally, the specific position of the papacy within the communio structure of the Church and its fundamental ecclesiological function are emphasised more clearly.
