Abstract

This article examines Noel Treanor's text against the background of Jacques Delors' (President of the European Commission from 1986 to 1995) call for a civil society dialogue on the objectives and future of the European Union, thereby giving it a soul. COMECE, founded in 1980, certainly made a significant contribution to this process during the first decades of its existence. In the second part, the author asks whether the establishment of the relationship between the churches and the European Union – which had developed over the years and was enshrined in Article 17 TFEU of the Treaty of Lisbon, as Treanor had hoped – has, whilst formalising this relationship, simultaneously drained it of the dynamism so fervently desired by Delors.
