The Orthodox Church is a community of sixteen autonomous churches; seven of these Orthodox churches are present in Germany, some of them with multiple dioceses. Four of these dioceses are recognized in various federal states as public-law corporations. Under the provisions of the Basic Law, these public-law corporations may consecrate res sacrae, which, as matters governed by public law, enjoy special protection under the German legal system. Following the war in Ukraine, over one million refugees have arrived in Germany; in line with the fragmentation of Orthodoxy in Ukraine itself, they belong to five different jurisdictions. From a canon law perspective, however, four of these churches are to be classified as canonical based on an emergency provision of the Concilium Quinisextum.
