Pope Francis encouraged a more synodal organisation of the Church in his address given on 17 October 2015 to mark the 50th anniversary of the Synod of Bishops. The fact that this process of becoming a more synodal church was described as a „path“ may already indicate that, almost ten years later, very different priorities have emerged and the discussion about synodality has unleashed a variety of dynamics. The Munich canon lawyer Stephan Haering OSB (1959-2020) has repeatedly explored this topic in his publications, particularly with regard to the ecclesiastical situation in Germany. In line with his research specialisms, as a canonist he adopted a legal-historical and constitutional perspective. His work can also be used to develop current contributions to the discussion and to gain principle-led points of orientation so as not to lose the overview in the broad field of specialist discussion.
